Welcome to the New York State Weatherization Directors Association (NYSWDA). Since its inception in 1985, NYSWDA has made it a priority to be the 'go-to' resource for information, technical training, and best practices in the home performance industry.
NYSWDA is the leading provider of building sciences training in New York State. Our facilities, in Syracuse, Buffalo, and Troy, NY, are designed to integrate classroom training and laboratory exercises providing field technicians an exceptional learning experience. Our trainers are subject matter experts with years of field and classroom experience.
NYSWDA is a Building Performance Institute (BPI) affiliate and an approved BPI Testing Center. We offer training and written/field tests onsite. NYSWDA has been working with BPI for over 20 years and all of our courses are eligible for continuing education units (CEU’s).
NYSWDA also assists both WAP agencies and home performance contractors in obtaining bulk purchase pricing benefits. This means better than contractor rate pricing on the one hundred+ products that we procure.
And finally, NYSWDA works closely with policy regulators and implementing agencies, advocating common sense energy policy and approaches to the home performance industry around the state.

Boot Camp for Weatherization - 1/9-1/12/17
This intensive 4-day training based at NYSWDA's Energy Efficiency Training Center (Building 2) in East Syracuse, is a great introduction to building science principles and hands-on air sealing, dense pack and loose fill cellulose insulation installation. Using our state-of-the-art realistic wall, ceiling and attic props, trainees will learn the techniques needed to effectively weatherize our clients' homes.
During this course, the trainees will be introduced to both HCR and BPI standards and regulations on Health & Safety, Lead Safe work practices and safe and proper use of tools and equipment. Trainees will also become proficient on the set up of blower doors and understand basic use of an infrared camera during air sealing operations.
All three HCR mandatory trainings are covered in this course:
Air Sealing - mandatory for WX directors, energy auditors, post inspectors, crew chiefs and crew personnel
Health & Safety - mandatory for WX directors, energy auditors, post inspectors, crew chiefs and heating technicians
Lead Safe Weatherization - mandatory for all employees who may come in contact with lead based paint while performing their duties
Please reference the WAP Policies and Procedures manual for further details. The above-listed trainings are mandatory for the positions stated. If a subgrantee hires a new employee into one of these postions, or a current employee transfers into one of these positions, it is mandatory that they receive this training within six (6) months of their start date. These mandatory training sessions must be repeated every three (3) years by subgrantee personnel who occupy these positions.
INFRARED FOR WEATHERIZATION PROFESSIONALS - 1/18 - 1/19/17
NYSWDA has partnered with Infraspection Institute, the world's oldest independent training & certification firm for thermographers and a nationally known leader in infrared imaging technology. This 2 day training involves both classroom and hands-on field sessions. The attendees, upon completion of the training, will have an understanding of the basic heat theory necessary for all thermal work and will know how to best utilize the imaging equipment they have and be better able to employ the equipment to perform blower door assisted air sealing practices, residential energy audit inspections and post inspections.
EPA RRP LEAD RENOVATOR REFRESHER - 1/31/17
This class is for for those needing to renew their current EPA RRP Lead Renovator Certification.
Note: For those who have a lapsed certification, you must repeat the initial training.
This half-day refresher course will enable current certified lead renovators to renew their certification for another five (5) year period. This training is approximately 3.33 hours classroom and .66 hours hands-on lab work followed by a short written test. EPA Lead Renovators may take this renewal class for their certification up to 6 months prior to their certification expiration date. Upon successful completion, attendees will recieve a new Lead Renovator card from the training provider (NYSWDA). The EPA requires all contractors that work in pre-1978 housing to have this certification.
HCR requires that sub-grantees must have at least one Lead Renovator per crew present each day. HCR suggests that agencies employ more than one Lead Renovator per crew to ensure that a certified individual is present every day while a pre-1978 house is being weatherized.
Prerequisite: A completed EPA RRP Lead Renovator training and current certification.
