Systematic Approach to Air Sealing
This training is for: Ulster County Community Action Committee (host), Sullivan, Dutchess, Orange)
Auditors and Crew Leaders
Course Description:
This training will be directed toward auditors, crew supervisors and others interested in understanding the relationship between zonal pressures and air flows. The blower door and the digital manometer will be taken to new uses in determining the volume of air flow (CFM) that moves through attached zones such as attics, garages, crawlspaces, etc. when performing a blower door test. This is important as it can help prioritize areas of the building on which to focus air leakage reduction efforts, and can be used to evaluate the effectiveness of completed air sealing. Additionally this training will focus on techniques used to locate air leakage paths and effective ways to air seal.
I. Using infrared imagery year round to locate air leakage - Demonstration of how to use building pressures to increase the image and track air leakage routes through the building with infrared
II. Using the blower door, duct blaster and pressures to locate air leakage - Using positive and negative pressures and diagnostic smoke to locate air leakage routes through the building frame and distribution ductwork.
III. Using zonal pressure calculators and the blower door to measure CFM airflow from individual attics, porches, garages and spaces attached to the conditioned space. A little bit of math and physics but nothing complicated.
IV. Mapping, locating and exposing air leakage routes through the building frame. This may involve some hammer and prybar efforts.
V. Air sealing techniques with 2 part spray urethane -- Attendees will have an opportunity to apply 2 part urethane foam spray as an approach to air sealing.
VI. Air sealing building frames with high density cellulose -- High density cellulose can be a very effective air sealing measure when done right and installed in the correct places. We will examine building frames as the largest source of air leakage and demonstrate ways to effectively address band joist areas between floors, interior wall partitions and open framed stairwells with high density cellulose
VII. Air sealing chimneys and vents for safety - a brief demonstration on correct materials and techniques for sealing active chimneys and vent pipes
VIII. Diagnostics for locating duct leaks and duct sealing practices - a hands on exercise in locating duct leaks with pressure, and strategies for repairing and improving various duct leaks and deficiencies
IX. Health and safety testing of the combustion appliance zones and combustion appliance drafts as standard operating procedure for air sealed buildings
