Lead-Safe Work Practices

NOTE: The following are the actual work practices the WAP network must adhere to with or without a NID when the following weatherization measures are performed.  These steps are also what should be included in your "Lead Logs" as proof you followed the process.

Caution: Whenever possible, be careful not to rub against any painted surfaces with your body, weatherization materials, or tools.

Siding

Removing siding (clapboard, asbestos, and aluminum siding)

  1. Lay 6 mil poly down on the ground and secure it to building with tape.  (6ft. out for every 10ft. of wall height)

  2. Cover all landscaping with burlap or disposable drop clothes.

  3. Spray down the siding thoroughly with lcd and water.

  4. Score the painted seams with a utility knife.\

  5. Remove nails.

  6. Remove siding and place on poly

Reinstalling siding

  1. Lay 6 mil poly down on the ground and secure it to building with tape.  (6ft out for every 10 ft of wall height)

  2. Cover all landscaping with burlap or disposable drop clothe.

  3. Spray down with lcd the siding to be reinstalled as well as any surfaces on the building it may come in contact with.

  4. Lift siding into place being careful not to scrape the siding against painted surfaces.

  5. Replace nails with oversized nails into the original holes

  6. Vacuum, then fold poly into itself and secure with tape for disposal.

NOTE:  In gathering the air monitoring data from agencies, we have found a couple of high readings related to removing siding, especially shingles, even when sprayed down with lcd.  The problem was determined to be the small amount of dust behind the shingle or siding.  NYSWDA there highly recommends agencies, in addition to spraying the outside of the siding, also mist up behind the shingle or clapboard as it is being removed...

Drilling

Drilling holes through painted surfaces.

  1. Lay 6 mil poly down on the ground and secure it to building with tape.  (6ft out for every 10ft of wall height)

  2. Cover all landscaping with burlap or disposable drop clothes.

  3. When drilling holes through exterior painted surfaces use an auger bit rather than a hole saw.  A hole saw is more likely to create dust.

  4. Spray surface to be drilled with lcd before drilling.

  5. Drill holes, fill wall cavity, and plug holes with wood plugs.

  6. Vacuum, then fold poly into itself and secure with tape for disposal.
