A note from our Executive Director

AndyWelcome to the New York State Weatherization Directors Association! NYSWDA has been incorporated since 1985 and we provide training, technical, and logistical support to our network of weatherization programs and home performance contractors across the state and the north east. We pride ourselves on our ability to react to the needs of our members with quality training, program advocacy, as well as other member benefits. Check out our member benefits page for more information.

One of the best reasons to join NYSWDA is to receive discounts on our training. We offer some of the best training in residential building science anywhere… period. All of my trainers are subject matter experts with years of field experience. We know field personnel, and their needs, since most of us came from that world. In the classroom, you cannot replace a trainer that has real field experience with one that learned housing science from a textbook, it simply does not work. Our students respect our “been there, done that” approach to training and as a result are much more receptive to the information we have to offer.

Our primary training goal is to make the knowledge that we pass along to our members and students count. Whether you are looking to improve efficiency in the field, integrate new technology into your business or agency, improve the overall energy efficiency of the homes you work on, or meet regulatory requirements, NYSWDA is committed to assisting you. Over 1,000 students pass through our doors annually and we are extremely proud of the fact that once you have attended training with us, you are very likely to come back for more.

Our training facilities are designed with you in mind. We integrate classroom training and laboratory exercises using the latest diagnostic equipment to provide energy auditors and field technicians an exceptional learning experience with emphasis on applied mechanical skills. Whether you attend training at our facilities in Syracuse, Buffalo, or Troy, we offer the ability to train applied skills which is paramount to a well-rounded energy efficiency training program.

NYSWDA is a Building Performance Institute (BPI) affiliate and we offer training courses in: Building Analyst, Envelope Professional, Manufactured Housing, and Heating Professional. As an approved BPI Testing Center we offer written and field tests onsite, eliminating the need to “find” suitable housing. BPI was launched out of the Weatherization Assistance Program twenty years ago and we have maintained a longstanding relationship with their staff. All of our courses are eligible for Continuing Education Units (CEU’s).

For more information on our wide range of coursework, availability, and pricing, visit our Training Calendar and Catalog pages.

Aside from training, my staff and I track technological advancements in energy efficiency and policy and regulatory changes so that we can not only keep our members at the forefront of new technology, but also ensure compliance with regulators.

We hope you consider becoming a member of NYSWDA at any one of our levels. If you do, we’ll offer you a substantial discount on all of our training, including prep courses for BPI certification. Ask my staff about customized or one-on-one training to prepare you or your employees for BPI Field Examinations.
