This one day “hand
s on” course is for those looking to sharpen their Combustion Appliance Zon
e (CAZ) testing skills and for those looking for the basic testing skills n
ecessary for entry level energy auditors, crew leaders and installers in th
e weatherization, building home performance, and HVAC industries.
The
classroom portion of this course will be a review of the Building Performa
nce Institute (BPI) standards for combustion safety test procedures for ven
ted appliances which covers testing of gas or oil fired forced air systems,
boilers, domestic hot water heaters, gas fired ranges and ovens. Additiona
lly, attendees using a combustible gas leak detector, will be taught the pr
oper sequence of gas leak detection and evaluation as outlined in the BPI s
tandards.
Attendees will be introduced to common C
AZ testing equipment and combustion analyzers such as the Energy Conservato
ry DG-700 digital pressure manometer, Bacharach combustible gas leak detect
or, Bacharach carbon monoxide detector, Bacharach and Testo combustion anal
yzers.
During the “hands on” lab portion of this c
ourse each attendee will be guided through step by step testing procedures
using the most modern testing equipment and will walk away from this course
with an enhanced knowledge of gas leak detection practices , and proper CA
Z and Steady State Efficiency (SSE) testing procedures.

combustion safety test field guide, a laminated DG-700 CAZ test field guid
e, and a printed handout of all course material.
Weatherization Field Staff: With the introduction of the new Quality Control Inspection requirements, it is doubly important that yo ur crew supervisors are performing the HCR required daily test-out procedur es correctly. Please consider sending your crew leaders to this course to sharpen their CAZ testing skills and to enhance your agency's compliance wi th HCR's policies.

n” setup/testing
• Discuss CAZ Limits
• Evaluate draft and spillage
• Perform ambient and app
