HEP Energy Auditor

Training Location: NYSWDA Training Center – 5869 Fisher Road, East Syracuse, NY 13057

Who Should Attend:
Weatherization agency post inspectors and auditors, Home Performance contractors, Program compliance field inspectors

Course Description:
The Home Energy Professional Energy Auditor Certification is based on the Energy Auditor Job Task Analysis, an industry-led collaboration directed by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), which defines the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the job of an Energy Auditor working in the Weatherization or Home Performance industries.  https://www.energy.gov/sites/prod/files/2018/04/f50/HEP-SF-EA-JTA_final.pdf

The Home Energy Professional (HEP) - Energy Auditor is a comprehensive 5-day training which covers many topics including fundamentals of home assessment, energy auditor math, federal WAP requirements, the NREL Standard Work Specifications (SWS), energy modeling and work scope development, and the use of diagnostic equipment including Blower Door, Duct Leakage Tester, Exhaust Fan Flow Meter and Combustion Safety Testing equipment.

This training prepares students to challenge the written and field examinations required to achieve the BPI Home Energy Professional Energy Auditor Certification.  To achieve the BPI Home Energy Professional Energy Auditor Certification, a student must receive a passing score on both the Written and Field Examinations. Students seeking this Certification must meet additional prerequisites in order to qualify to challenge the exams (see Prerequisites section below) and must provide proof of approval from BPI in order to take the exams.

Please note that for this course, the cost of each Written and Field Exams is NOT included in the price and must be paid for and that field tests are scheduled separately.

This is a lecture-lab course. Topics will be presented in a classroom setting and then followed up with student involvement in the lab. The class will be geared towards those individuals who have had field experience and/or training as an energy auditor or post inspector. Student participation is very important.

The classroom/lab facility has 10 classroom training modules with an 8-hour lab practical review where students can work to enhance some of the basic building science, diagnostic testing, and communication skills needed to be an effective QCI. These modules and various props will allow the students hands on use of the diagnostic tools and equipment that they will be using in the field. Students will take one written 100-question, multiple-choice test at the end of the course.  After passing the written test, attendees have up to one year to schedule a hands-on field test (4 hours).  Upon successful completion of these tests, each student receives their certification from BPI.

This course is designed to prepare qualified students to take the BPI HEP Energy Auditor certification exam.

To see if you qualify to take these exams, please go to BPI:  EA Prerequisites  and then submit an EA Application

Course Assessments and Evaluations:
Formative assessments will be conducted by observation throughout classroom and lab review sessions. Redirection will be provided as observed. Opportunities for questions and answers are provided routinely throughout all lessons. Successful completion of the course includes:

  • 100% attendance and participation (except in cases of extenuating circumstances, as determined by the Executive Director on a case-by-case basis, in which case, make-up sessions or performance evaluations must be approved in advance with the lead trainer)
  • A 70% average or above on written exam

Students successfully completing the course will receive a certificate of completion from NYSWDA's Weatherization Training Center. (Students who are not successful in completing this course are not excluded from testing in the BPI QCI Inspector certification. However, a failing grade on this course may not guarantee success on the BPI QCI Inspector certification test.)
